Flounders (BOTHIDAE)

The Panther Flounder (Bothus pantherinus) is weird creature indeed. Both eyes are on one side it is adapted to laying on its side. But unlike the Sting Ray swims like a normal fish. In its larval stage the flounder is like any normal fish with eyes on two sides. But as it grows older one eye migrates to the other side. This allows the fish to hide beneath a sand mound on its side so that the two eyes pop out and keep watch for potential pray and give them a nasty surprise.
