Fish & Coral: Scorpionfish (www.DiveSriLanka.com)

Scorpionfish (SCORPAENDIAE-2 )

Masters of disguise and thus very hard to spot the Scorpionfish packs a toxic sting in its dorsal fins that can only be neutralized by applying hot water to the affected area (If the victim is lucky enough to make it to the surface...). Seen here on the top is the False Stonefish (Scorpaenopsis diabola). Shown below is the deadly Stonefish, a confirmed diver killer the Reef Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) is very hard to spot. Almost always the fatalities occurred when a diver accidentally touched or stepped on the fish.

Below: A more detailed view of the Blotchfin Scorpionfish (Scorpaenodes varipinnis) and its beautiful eye.
